Counting cards is what comes first in people's minds whenever blackjack strategy is mentioned. This is hardly surprising as the strategy of counting cards has really captured the imagination of many as there is a wide misconception that the said strategy requires its users to have super-human intelligence and memory.

In reality, card counters, even if they do have super human intelligence and photographic memory, do not need such abilities to card count effectively. Here is an introduction as to how card counting is done and the other essential things to know as far as the said blackjack strategy is concerned.

First things first - debunking the card counting myths. As said earlier, numerous misconceptions pervade through the imagination of many especially of those who do not have much knowledge about the strategy and blackjack in general.

To clear up all of these, it is essential to remember these two things: one, that card counting does not require any super human ability for one to use it and two, that although it is an effective strategy, it is not a sure-fire way to be a great and successful player in blackjack.

So what is card counting really about? To sum up, card counting is the strategy of keeping track of the remaining cards in the playing deck to determine one's advantage in terms of probability. The strategy is used to track the ratio of high cards to low cards specifically, which is an important proportion to know in assessing whether one has good chances of landing the right cards or not.

There are many ways to card count but the most basic way to do the strategy is through the use of a plus-minus count system wherein the cards are assigned with certain values to make tracking them an easier task. Cards from 2 to 6 are assigned the value of +1 while ten-value cards including face cards are given the value of -1.

In the said system, a running count is in place to keep track of the cards that are already dealt which if done, will also indicate the remaining cards that are still in the deck. For each card that is dealt, the running count is adjusted according to the dealt card's value. The running total will then be the value that will indicate to the player the best thing to do in that particular situation.

Card counting is an essential strategy for all those who are into blackjack as it increases the accuracy of one's decision which is important in gambling game like blackjack wherein most are ruled by luck and unpredictability.
