The Essential Basic Rules of Blackjack

Unlike most card games, blackjack is not played against other players. In blackjack, one is not competing versus other blackjack players as in reality, one is playing the game all by one's self. The dealer is there only for dealing cards but all the actions and decisions in the game come from the players themselves. It is in this aspect that one can say that playing blackjack is much like solitaire, only much more exciting and fun.

The rules' objective for players playing blackjack is pretty simple: to get a hand total that is closer to 21 than the dealer's without going over board. Going bust is the term used for hands that have gone over 21 which is what players should avoid in the game.

The rules call for the regular 52 playing card deck to be the standard in the game and one or more decks can be used in a single game of blackjack. Since the goal in the game is to have a hand that has a total value of 21 or closer, each card in the deck is assigned a certain value. Cards with the rank of 2 to 10 are worth their face value while the face cards are worth 10.

Ace cards are special cases since they can be either an 11 or a 1, depending on the overall total of the hand that they are in. Aces are counted as 11 as long as the hand total will not go over 21. On the other hand, they are counted as a 1 if being counted as an 11 will bust the hand or make the total value of the hand go over 21.

As said earlier, the goal in the game is to have a hand total that is closer to 21 than the dealer's but in the event that the player busts, that player loses regardless whether the dealer also busts also. In addition, in the event that both the dealer and the player has equal totals, then such an occurrence is called a push according to the rules and players will get their bets back.

A game begins with the player placing the initial bet on to the table. A table's betting limit is usually printed on it so players won't have to ask the minimum or maximum bets that can be placed. After the bets are placed, the dealer will then give the player a pair of faced-down cards which are the ones that the player will be playing with.

The dealer will also have a pair of cards although one of those cards is faced-up and the other one faced-down. If the faced-up card is either an ace or a ten-value card, the dealer will then check the faced-down card before the player plays. In the case of the faced-up card being an ace however, the rules call for the dealer to offer the player an insurance first before checking the faced-down card.

The rules of blackjack are very much easy to comprehend, even easier than those of relatively more popular card games such poker. This makes getting into the game relatively easier which makes it imperative for individuals who intend to get into blackjack to be knowledgeable of the game before actually playing it.
